Welcome to the April Sports Report! This edition will focus on the most recent sporting news, including NFL offseason news, NBA and MLB news, and international sporting announcements. Let’s begin!

The NFL offseason is in full swing, as free agency (or the “Legal tampering period”) started on March 12th. A plethora of moves have already occurred, including top-tier running backs such as Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, and Saquon Barkley signing with the Ravens, Packers, and Eagles, respectively. Additionally, a key quarterback move happened: Kirk Cousins left the Vikings to sign with the Atlanta Falcons on a four-year 180 million dollar deal. These signings are just part of this year’s free agency frenzy, and there are many more big moves to come.

In a league-changing decision made one week ago, the NBA approved the Seattle Supersonics’ relocation to Oklahoma City by a vote of 28-2. This decision has broken the hearts of Sonics fans and Seattleites, as for the first time since the 60s, Seattle will not have an NBA team. The move is explained by the recent sale of the team from Howard Schultz to the Professional Basketball Club LLC. The new team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, will inherit 19-year-old rookie of the year Kevin Durant and will have plenty of draft capital to rebuild the Sonics, who finished with just 20 wins last year.

The MLB season is starting soon, and the Seattle Mariners are heading into this season with championship hopes. Of course, last year the Mariners broke the record for wins in a season, winning 116 out of 162 regular season games. Despite losing to the Yankees 4-1 in the ALCS, the Mariners have a lot to build on. The stars of the team, Ichiro Suzuki and Edgar Martinez, will look to finally bring a championship to the Mariners. With this core, it is a certainty that they will make the playoffs for many years to come, and a 20-plus-year playoff drought will definitely not happen in the future.

In the world of Hockey, the National Hockey League (NHL) was just announced as the new major Hockey league in North America. The sport of Hockey, still  a relatively new invention, has swept through Canada and the US. The league will start with four teams, all based in Canada, but considering the growing popularity of the sport it feels inevitable that the league will spread to the US in the future.

Interesting developments have come out of college basketball recently, as the NCAA is hosting a college basketball tournament. It has been coined “March Madness” by an Illinois High School Official, though this is a term that surely won’t spread and last for nearly a century. The tournament will have eight teams, with Brown and Oregon currently favored.

Additionally, the first-ever Soccer World Cup just concluded. It was a truly momentous occasion, with the host country Uruguay winning the championship. The US team finished third and will surely win many more world cup medals as more World Cups take place.

A new sporting event is taking place this summer in Olympia, Greece. Named after Mount Olympus, the Olympic games will be held at Olympia Stadion. The Greek Empire is allowing all free male Greek citizens to participate, and there will only be one event, a 190m sprint the length of the stadium.

Lastly, Ancient Egypt is getting into the sports world, as they have been to regulate many sports such as wrestling, rowing, archery, and various kinds of ball games. They have begun creating monuments to Pharaohs depicting these sporting events, and their interest in sports will allow sports to spread to other civilizations as well.
