After a short break, the sports report is back! This February edition will go through the Winter Sports season, focusing on the extremely successful seasons of the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams. Later, a preview of the spring sports season will be given, and the report finish with a look at sports around the country and world. Let’s get started!
Girls’ Basketball: The girls’ basketball season came to an end on the 13th with a playoff loss to Sultan, 42-36. They finished with an imposing 13-6 record, a huge improvement compared to their 5-16 record last year. Some highlights were an 11-4 conference record and two home playoff wins. They also put together a seven-game win streak during the middle of the season. Junior Kate Hutchinson earned All-Conference team honors, and the team finished in a strong 22nd out of 59 1A schools in RPI (rating performance index). In the conference tournament, King’s, SAAS, and CPC all made it to State, with King’s winning the conference tournament. Overall, it was an incredibly successful season for the girls’ varsity team.
Boys’ Basketball: The boys’ varsity basketball team had an extremely successful season, accentuated by an 11-1 conference record. This resulted in them winning the Coho Division title, which will be the basketball program’s first title since 2001. The season came to an end after a third-round playoff exit to Northwest. The boys finished with a 15-7 record, a huge improvement compared to last year’s 7-11 finish. Juniors Paul Hutchinson and Phanuel Wodaje both finished with Coho all-conference team honors. SAAS ended up as conference champion and will be heading the state along with Sultan and King’s. The JV team finished 6-10 with a 4-4 conference record. All in all, with huge improvements for both the varsity teams, the future is bright for Blazer basketball.
Spring Sports Preview: Spring Sports at Bush are starting soon, with practices beginning on Monday after Mid-Winter Break. Boys’ varsity soccer, led by head coach Marcelino Dumpit, is looking to build off of a solid season last year, with a total of 6 wins compared to 4 losses. They’ll kick off the season at home against Cedar Park Christian on March 9th. The JV team will start their season with an away match versus Sultan on March 13th. Many other sports are starting, such as girls’ golf, with their first match against CPC and Bear Creek on March 12th. Girls’ tennis has their first game on March 20th against Eastside Prep. Track and Field is starting with a league meet at Sultan on March 21, and finally, girls’ ultimate has their home opener against SAAS on March 14th.
US Sporting News: The NFL season has ended after a crazy playoff tournament. Key storylines during the playoffs were Jordan Love and the young Green Bay Packers’ emergence, the Detroit Lions breaking decades of losing en route to a conference championship appearance, and the San Francisco 49ers super team once again making it to the precipice of eternal football glory. However, they fell just short in overtime to the new NFL dynasty, the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs, led by all-time great QB Patrick Mahomes, came back from down 10 to win the Super Bowl 25-22, their second in a row and third in five years. The Seahawks fell just short of the playoffs, finishing 9-8. They decided to fire Head Coach Pete Carroll and hired ex-Ravens Defensive Coordinator Mike Macdonald. The hiring takes them from having the oldest head coach, at 72 years old, to the youngest, at 36 years old. A key offseason is ahead for the Hawks, as they try to find a way to improve from the last two seasons. They currently have the 16th overall pick, and many experts believe they will target an offensive lineman such as Troy Fautanu or Jackson Powers-Johnson, helping out a pass protection that was shaky at best last year. In the NBA, the All-Star Break just concluded. Some highlights were a second consecutive dunk contest championship for Mac Mcclung, Steph Curry out-dueling Sabrina Ionescu in a special three-point matchup, and Damian Lillard winning both all-star game MVP and three-point contest MVP. In the standings, the Celtics and Timberwolves are currently first in both of their respective conferences. Finally, the MLB offseason is almost over, with spring training kicking off on February 22nd. The Mariners had a successful offseason, navigating their way through a difficult salary situation. Despite losing key bats like Jarred Kelenic, Eugenio Suarez, and Teoscar Hernandez, they gained many key position players. Outfielder Mitch Haniger is coming back to the PNW after a one-year stint in San Francisco, seasoned veteran and World Series champion Mitch Garver will become a star hitter in the middle of the lineup, and star infielder Jorge Polanco will arrive after a huge trade with the Minnesota Twins.
