The Rambler's Official 2024 Oscar Predictions

Disclaimer: I have not seen some of the movies I will be reviewing, and others I haven’t watched in months. Why? Six out of ten best picture nominees are over 2 hours, and I don’t have the patience for that. Also, I am not predicting every category, since some are boring or I just don’t know enough about them.

The 96th Academy awards will take place on March 10, 2024, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. As a professional film critic and expert, here are my Oscar predictions and reviews:

I think Best Picture is going to be Oppenheimer. I would like it to be Maestro, Past Lives, or Barbie (obviously) but let's be real, they are probably going to choose Oppenheimer. The academy loves films about quiet science guys who go through moral dilemmas.

For Best Actress, I’m thinking Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon. I haven’t seen the movie, but Gladstone has already won a ton of awards (plus, they’re awesome) so it is most likely. I might consider Sandra Hüller, considering she is in two movies nominated for  Best Picture—Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest—but my final guess is Lily Gladstone.

Best Actor, I’m predicting Jeffrey Wright in American Fiction. Maybe the academy will be basic and choose Cillian Murphy. Don’t get me wrong, I love Cillian Murphy, but I don’t love monotone Cillian Murphy in a fedora for three hours straight.

Supporting actress is tough. I considered Danielle Brooks in The Color Purple and Jodie Foster in Nyad, but my vote goes to Da’Vine Joy Randolph in The Holdovers, since the movie received nominations in the Best Picture and Best Actor category as well. The Holdovers will be a Christmas classic one day.

My choice for Best Supporting Actor is Robert Downey Junior in Oppenheimer. Why? Because the academy likes traitors. I would prefer Mark Ruffalo to receive the award for Poor Things, but it’s unlikely. Of everything that is happening in this category, I’m most excited to see Ryan Gosling perform I’m just Ken.

For Best Original Screenplay, I’m voting for Past Lives. A24 swept the awards last year, and although Past Lives hasn’t received as much credit as other nominees, I think it could win. I know everyone else thinks Anatomy of a Fall, but I want to be different, so my final guess is Past Lives.

Best Adapted Screenplay is a tough category this year. I decided to review the trailers of all five movies to make my prediction. The two best trailers are American Fiction and Barbie. Final guess: The Zone of Interest.

I am predicting the Best Animated Feature Film will be The Boy and the Heron. I would say Spiderman: Across the Spider-verse, because it was a great movie, but I’m annoyed it ended on a cliff hanger and so is everyone else.

Best International Film: The Zone of Interest. It received more nominations in other categories than any other International film nominee. But maybe Society of the Snow

Here are some quick predictions that I don’t want to explain:

Cinematography - El Conde

Costume Design - Barbie

Film Editing - Oppenheimer

Makeup and Hairstyling - Maestro

Music, Original Score - American Fiction

Music, Original - What was I made for? from Barbie (snubbed at Critic’s Choice)

Sound - The Zone of Interest

Visual Effects - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Finally, My Best Director prediction is… Greta Gerwig. But it's probably gonna be Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer. He has enough awards, let's move on.

These are all just opinions and really the Oscars are kinda stupid. Greats like Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci, Annette Benning, and Ian Mcklellen don’t have any Oscars, and they’re millionaires. Enjoy the show, or the recap, and give me $20 if I get these right.
